Attambelus VII.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Attambelos VII was king of the Charakene , a vassal state of the Parthians , from about 113/4 to 116/7 .

Attambelos VII is known from a few bronze coins that were used in 113/4 AD. In 114 Emperor Trajan began his Parthian campaign . In 115 or 116 he was able to take the capital Ctesiphon and the emperor then moved to the Persian Gulf with a fleet of 50 ships. According to Cassius Dio , the local ruler Attambelos (VII.) Submitted to the emperor without a fight.

Mesopotamia was not held by the Romans for long and was probably abandoned shortly after Trajan's death. The fate of the Charakene and Attambelus VII during this period is unknown. The next king of this realm is only attested for 131 AD with Meredates . Presumably there was no ruler in the meantime and the small empire was ruled directly by the Parthians.
