Attania
Attania, the good mermaid from Biggesee. Recorded on the occasion of the "baptism" on May 3, 2012.

Attania (with the emphasis on the third syllable) is the name of a sculpture on Gilberginsel in the Biggesee . The “good mermaid from Biggesee”, over eight meters long and weighing around ten tons, was created by the artist Friedrich Freiburg from Rönkhausen.

The sculpture was erected in spring 2012. It can be observed from aboard a ship or from a distance on the shore. When it was handed over to the public, it was not quite complete. Since rare bird species breed on Gilberg Island, work was interrupted during the breeding season.

The project was initiated by the Olpe district . The realization and financing was carried out by the city of Attendorn and the Sparkasse Foundation for Attendorn, Lennestadt and Kirchhundem as the main sponsor. The project fits into the activities for the Regionale 2013 as an independent initiative .

The name Attania was found in a school competition. The proposal came from a fourth grade at the Attandarra Community Primary School in Attendorn.
