The Attic Zoological Park ( Greek Αττικό Ζωολογικό Πάρκο ) is a zoo with around 2000 animals from around 400 species. It is located on 20 hectares east of Athens . It is the only zoological park of its kind in Greece .

location

The Attic Zoological Park is located approx. 15 km east of Athens city center and approx. 5 km northwest of the Athens-Eleftherios Venizelos airport in the area of the municipality of Spata-Artemida .

The zoo can be reached by public transport using the 319 bus. This commutes every half hour between the zoological park and the Doukissis Plakentias station of the Athens Metro, which belongs to the subway line 3 .

History of the zoo

The Athens zoo in the national garden, which has existed since the 19th century, had to be severely restricted in the 1990s because reconstruction according to current legal requirements was not possible for spatial reasons.

The new Attic Zoological Park started operations in May 2000. At that time it was a pure bird park , which with 300 different bird species and a total of 1100 birds was the third largest park of its kind in the world. When it opened, the park also had a farm-themed area with typical animals and three large walk -in aviaries .

In the years that followed, the zoo's offerings were expanded to include several themes. Essentially, these are the following extensions:

  • April 2001: The world of reptiles
  • Summer 2002: Greek fauna with rare animal species found in Greece
  • February 2003: African savannah
  • June 2003: monkey area
  • December 2004: Completion of the construction work in the area for big cats and expansion of the African savannah area
  • Beginning of 2005: Monkey Forest , where visitors can stay in the same area as the monkeys
  • March 2008: Cheetah Land and areas for chimpanzees and gibbons
  • April 2008: desert areas

In May 2010, the range of animals to be viewed was expanded to include two white rhinos . In May of the same year u. a. four dolphins added to the zoo.

Expansion plans

The zoo's expansion plans provide for two main measures. A museum about the origin and age of the dinosaurs is to be built in Dinosavropolis . With Okeanopolis , an aquarium of international format is to be created.

Special animals

In addition to the rare white tigers , the zoo also keeps big cats such as jaguars , lynxes , pumas and lions .

Even bald eagle or Komodo dragons are part of the inventory.
