Aušrinė

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aušrinė (»Dawn«) is the goddess of dawn and dawn in Lithuanian mythology .

myth

According to Lithuanian folk songs, the moon god Mėnuo fell in love with the young Aušrinė, which is why Mėnuo and his wife Saulė fell out and their marriage was dissolved.

The goddess is first mentioned by the Polish historian Jan Łasicki :

"Ausca, dea est radiorum solis vel occumbentis vel supra horizontem ascendentis."

"Ausca is the goddess of the sun's rays, which both sink and rise above the horizon."

- Jan Łasicki : De diis Samagitarum ceterorumque Sarmatarum et falsorum Christianorum (1580)

The name Ausca does not exactly reflect the name Aušra.

Comparisons

In Latvian mythology , Auseklis is the god of the morning star.

The goddess is compared with the assumed Indo-European goddess * H 2 eusōs ("Dawn"), and can then be assigned to the Vedic Uṣāḥ , the Greek Ēōs and the Roman aurōra .
