The ESI Group produces software for virtual prototypes, which means that CAD and CAE software are used to numerically simulate the function and physical behavior of technical products (e.g. automobiles or aircraft). The software is used by companies in the automotive, aviation and energy supply industries for development and construction.

The company began in 1973 as an engineering consultancy for aerospace, defense and energy supply companies. In 1985 ESI developed the crash test simulation software PAM-CRASH together with a German consortium led by Volkswagen . On July 6, 2000, the company went public on the Paris “Nouveau Marché” stock market of NYSE Euronext .

In February 2004, through the takeover of CFD Research Corp, the simulation programs CFD-ACE +, CFD-FASTRAN, CFD-VISCART and CFD-CADalyzer for numerical fluid mechanics were added to the software package. On September 12, 2012, ESI acquired OpenCFD Ltd, which develops the OpenFOAM CFD software under the GPL license. On February 27, 2017, ESI acquired Scilab Enterprises SAS, which publishes Scilab software .

The ESI Group is listed in the CAC Small share index of the Paris Stock Exchange .
