history

At the site of Auchdennan House there was a previous building from 1818. This was a manor house built in the Italian villa style, of which no traces can be found. Auchdennan House was completed in 1866 after three years of construction. The client was George Martin , who commissioned the architect John Burnet with the planning. After Auchdennan House became the property of the chemical industrialist Chrystal , he commissioned various extensions and conversions in 1902, for which Alexander Nisbet Paterson was responsible. He designed large parts of the interior design, which is explicitly listed as exemplary and worthy of protection in the entry in the list of monuments. Today the castle houses a youth hostel. In addition, rooms for conferences and meetings have been set up.
