The novel tells the story of an old man who lives on Mântuleasa Street and by chance falls into the clutches of the Romanian communist secret police, Securitate , who believe him to be an enemy, fascist agent of General Antonescu . In order to escape prison, he invents a story about a noble Fraulein Cristina, which he continues to spin out and adorns with invented details, but which is so exciting and detailed that the interrogator can't help but keep listening to her. As the interrogation of the old man is prolonged as a result, in the end the officer is suspected of working for the counterrevolution and is arrested by his colleagues while the old man is released.
