Aufbruch - independent journal for religion and society (own spelling "Aufbruch") is a journal that has been published in Switzerland since 1988 .

The Aufbruch first appeared in December 1988 under the name “Aufbruch - Forum für an Open Church” as a reaction to the conflict over the appointment of Wolfgang Haas as Bishop of Chur . In the summer of 1988 a group called “Basic Church Networking” (BKV) was formed, which decided to publish a newspaper. On November 2nd, 1988 the association “Förderkreis Aufbruch” was founded as a sponsoring association, and on November 28th the first edition was printed with a print run of 100,000 copies.

The Aufbruch was published eight times a year from the beginning, until 2007 in newspaper format with a length of 16 pages. One year after the launch, the number of subscriptions reached a good 10,000 copies and at the end of 1991 the highest level of 11,500 copies. At the end of 2011 the circulation was around 5,500 copies. The Aufbruch has been produced by permanently employed editors since 1990, supported by a volunteer editorial team.

After the departure had opened up denominationally shortly after it began, in 2003 it adopted a new model that underlined the ecumenical-interreligious orientation of the newspaper.

In 2006, the Tübingen theologian Hans Küng suggested a journalistic voice in the German-speaking area that "critically accompanies church processes and hierarchical decisions and shows perspectives for present and future-oriented Christian action". Based on this suggestion, the Aufbruch has been working with Publik-Forum since 2008 , the German newspaper for critical Christians that was created in 1971. Since then, Aufbruch has been published eight times a year in tabloid format (until 2009 with the subtitle “Newspaper for Religion and Society”) with a 16-page cover section produced by the Aufbruch editorial team and a 32-page core section, which - with the assistance of the Aufbruch editorial team - is produced by the editorial staff of the Publik-Forum.
