Emergence sickness

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As emergence diseases or damping-off is referred to plant diseases in agriculture , horticulture and forestry , the the seedling infested during and after germination as a young plant, and thereby germination and emergence complicate or even prevent.

Causes and countermeasures

Many of these diseases can be traced back to fungal pathogens such as Pythium or Fusarium . Since damp and cool conditions favor the spread of the diseases, the cause are usually too dense seedlings or too extensive watering on an overly compacted soil with poor ventilation. Vegetables such as cabbage , cucumber and salads as well as ornamental plants and cereals are often infested .

Countermeasures include the pickling of seeds with fungicides before sowing . Using sand and stone meal or compost will prevent the disease from occurring. Keeping dry and avoiding early sowing and close crop rotations (especially with grain) counteract the problem. Before transplanting, a root bath with horsetail broth has a preventive effect .
