Elevator Museum
The exhibition building: Mannheim-Seckenheim water tower from 1911 with an outside elevator
|
The elevator museum in Mannheim-Seckenheim is the company museum of the elevator manufacturer Lochbühler and is now housed in the listed water tower of this Mannheim district .
history
In 1873 Georg Lochbühler founded a blacksmith's and wagon forge in Seckenheim, which was expanded into a locksmith's and mechanical workshop in 1905. In the 1920s it manufactured machines for the tobacco industry and agriculture, and in 1925 the first elevator system. From 1960 the production concentrated on elevator construction. The components for the elevators were almost all manufactured in our own workshops. The product range in this area was broadened and special elevators were manufactured.
In 1986, the company's own elevator technology collection - until then stored in the main building and an adjacent farm - was housed in the basement of a new company building in Mannheim-Friedrichsfeld . In 2002 the collection moved to the ground floor of the Seckenheim water tower, where it has been presented in an expanded form over four levels since 2012 in the previously renovated tower.
collection
The collection includes around 700 objects on the history of elevator construction. The collection items come from the technology and environment of elevator construction and have been brought together over the course of several decades. The collection dates back to the end of the 19th century. These include parts from the Lochbühler company as well as themed items from other manufacturers. One focus is the company history of Lochbühler and the production of elevators there. The collection ranges from archival material , such as construction plans, through technical components to complete elevator systems. The collection is unique in Europe.
The exhibition is presented on an outdoor area and on four levels in the water tower:
- Level -1: History of the Lochbühler company , examples from production
- Level 0: history of the water tower; History of the elevator
- Level 1: building services, no exhibition
- Level 2: Drives, components, controls, small goods lift
- Level 3: Paternoster , mill elevator, components
Historical elevator systems, equipment from the tobacco industry , tools and a few things about the local history of Seckenheim are shown and explained .
