history

Construction and operation

Up to the beginning of the 20th century the water supply in the municipality of Seckenheim, which was independent until 1930, came from private and public deep wells . From 1905, the local locksmith company Lochbühler began building a central water supply, which a growing number of households joined. From 1909 the municipality of Seckenheim also built a public water supply, for which the water tower was built from 1909 to 1911.

In 1956, Seckenheim was connected to the Mannheim water supply ring, which meant that the tower lost its original function.

Reuse

Initially, the water tower was planned for demolition, but was purchased by the Lochbühler company in 1978 and renovated in 1989. In 1989, on the occasion of the 90th birthday of the then senior owner of the company, Carl Lochbühler, the two top floors were converted into event rooms. The dome-shaped ceiling of the top room received ceiling lighting in the form of a starry sky in the constellation of Carl Lochbühler's birthday, July 31. The constellations can light up and dimmed individually . In order to comfortably reach the event rooms, an oil hydraulic elevator with a panorama cabin was built on the outside . Until then, there had only been one construction elevator.

In 2002 the in- house elevator museum of the local elevator manufacturer Lochbühler moved into the ground floor of the Seckenheim water tower.

From 2010 to 2012, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, with the support of the German Foundation for Monument Protection, the inside and outside of the tower was restored and rebuilt, a basement was excavated and two additional exhibition levels were created for the museum. The clock on the outside of the tower, originally located at a height of 20 meters and showing the water level, could be reconstructed on the basis of historical photographs. The tower was given its original paintwork. On June 22, 2012, the water tower with the newly erected museum was reopened. For historic preservation exemplary renovation the family Lochbühler 2014 received the Mannheimer price for historic preservation .
