Episcleral tattoo
The episcleral tattoo ( eyeball tattoo ) is a tattoo in which tattoo ink is injected under the dermis (sclera) of the eye .
Process and Risks
With this method, it is not possible to create motifs, as the color spreads uncontrollably between the conjunctiva and the dermis . Around 40 stitches are necessary to color the entire visible part of the white skin of the eye. The process is more painful than that of a normal tattoo, is only used on humans and is only used for body beautification . Since the eye is very sensitive, it can lead to serious complications such as bleeding , infections , scarring or allergic reactions up to complete blindness . Long-term effects have not yet been adequately researched medically. Doctors therefore strongly warn against such interventions. Nevertheless, the frequency of such tattoos has increased in recent years, especially in the USA .
The procedure is not to be confused with the corneal tattoo (keratography) , which is used solely for medical purposes.
