Eyes: falter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Die augen: falter are an artist collective founded in Leipzig in 2008 with an interest in original graphic techniques and handcrafted books. The group includes the artists Inka Grebner, Urte von Maltzahn-Lietz, Gerlinde Meyer, Franziska Neubert, Julia Penndorf, Nadine Respondek, Petra Schuppenhauer and Katja Zwirnmann.

The name "augen: falter" is a poetic term: On the one hand, it contains the free associations to pictures as well as the visual aspect in their work and work processes. On the other hand, it contains the reference to paper, the material and the manual side of their work.

history

In 2008 eight female artists, mostly graduates of the HGB Leipzig (University for Graphics and Book Art) from the fields of illustration or free graphics, joined together to form the artist group augen: falter. The reason for this was a joint stand at the Leipzig Book Fair in 2009. At that time, the idea was brought to life to create a joint work as a connecting element in the collective and to present it alongside the selected individual works. The artists have remained true to this idea to this day.

Artistic work

Since the company was founded, the artists have devised and realized books, portfolios and graphic projects together and show them at book and graphic fairs as well as in exhibitions at home and abroad. "A feast for the eyes in the hustle and bustle of the trade fair" was the headline of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung for the Leipzig Book Fair, enchanted by its diversity and ingenuity. The joint works are self-published. The book “Exercise in Paradise” - awarded in 2016 for the shortlist “The Most Beautiful German Books” - by Ingo Schulze was published in 2016 in the series “Die Holzschnittbücher” by Edition Klaus Rasch and is therefore an exception. A new edition was published by S. Fischer Verlag in 2018. The works are produced either by hand in the workshops and studios of the individual artists or in cooperation with museums ( Museum der Arbeit in Hamburg, Museum für Druckkunst Leipzig), associations (graphic printing workshop Werk 2 eV) and other art production facilities. The group mainly uses original graphic techniques for their work . They range from wood and linocut , acrylic engraving, etching , screen printing , original Offset , Blue Print ( cyanotype ) up to become extremely rare light pressure (light print workshop at the Museum of Printing Arts Leipzig).

"As different as their artistic handwriting may be, it is always possible to bring them together in their joint projects."

The group is looking for ways to revive the tradition of classic book design and printmaking with their projects and individual works and to create new approaches for the viewer.

"It is important to us to create good design for everyone, from postcards and small graphics from the original offset to the smallest limited, original graphic collector's items, there is something for everyone and also affordable. We apply the same quality standard to everything - the sheet of postcards receives the same attention as the large group projects. "
