Sullivan Heights is a district of Augsburg with about 150 inhabitants. The English name comes from the period 1945 to 1998, when American military troops of the US garrison Augsburg were stationed in Augsburg . Sullivan Heights served as a housing estate (so-called " Housing Area "). It is named after Captain Robert L. Sullivan, who lived in Augsburg for almost a year.

geography

Sullivan Heights is one of the smallest districts of Augsburg with an area of just over ten hectares and is located on the northern edge of the Pfersee-Nord district, which in turn is part of the Augsburg-Pfersee planning area .

The district is bordered to the north by Bürgermeister-Ackermann-Strasse, one of the main traffic axes on which the B 300 partially runs, to the east and south by Deutschebaurstrasse and to the west by the adjacent Centerville district , another former American residential area.

history

After the end of the Second World War , the American troops stationed in Augsburg from 1945 onwards took possession of an area of almost 60 hectares in the west of the city, on which they built the Sheridan barracks . However, since it was foreseeable from the start that the occupation troops would be stationed there for a very long time, many soldiers brought their families to their new homes, which is why civilian housing estates had to be built.

The former "fox settlement" - part of Pfersee - became one of these American residential areas and was named Sullivan Heights. Until the last American units withdrew in 1998, family members of soldiers and civilian employees from the barracks next door lived here.

The now abandoned buildings were renovated and upgraded from 1999 onwards and now offer around 150 people living space. There are also various supermarkets and fast food restaurants in the Sullivan Heights area .
