August Behrendsen (born June 5, 1819 in Magdeburg , † April 3, 1886 in Hildesheim ) was a German landscape painter .

Life

After visiting the Prussian Academy of the Arts in Berlin , where he studied landscape painting with August Wilhelm Ferdinand Schirmer , he was appointed to the Königsberg Art Academy in 1845 . After Alpine landscapes he painted here East Prussian subjects. One of his students was Friedrich Emil Neumann . In 1855 he was appointed professor . From 1844 to 1878 he was regularly represented in exhibitions in Berlin. Also known are his romantic views of East Prussian castles, which were created in 1856, such as Dönhoffstädt , Friedrichstein Castle (East Prussia) ,Schlobitten and Steinort Castle . The watercolors ended up in the collection of Queen Elisabeth of Prussia and are now in the holdings of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg in Potsdam .

In 1869 he became an external member of the Prussian Academy of Arts, Section for the Fine Arts. Because of a lung disease he had to give up his position in Königsberg in the same year. Shortly before November 18, 1879, his wife, Elise Behrendsen nee, died in Königsberg. Dullo. From his marriage to her he had two daughters:

  • Hedwig Marie Elise Behrendsen (* 1852 in Königsberg, † July 3, 1883 in Wiesbaden ),
  • Gertrud Behrendsen (* 1855 in Königsberg, † after 1889).

He later lived - sometimes together with his daughters - in Meran , Wiesbaden and Hildesheim.
