August Gottlieb Schmidt (painter)

August Gottlieb Schmidt (* before 1818 in Johanngeorgenstadt ; † after 1866 in Hanover ) was a German genre and portrait painter and drawing teacher .

Life

August Gottlieb Schmidt attended the Royal Saxon Academy of the Arts in Dresden as a student of Johann Carl Rößler . In an exhibition with artists from all over the country shown on August 3, 1818 in the Akademie der Künste, Schmidt was represented with several works, including a drawing based on plaster casts in Mengs's cast collection .

In an art exhibition, also held in the art academy on August 3, 1821, “for the best of the poor”, Schmidt's “female portrait, painted in oil from nature” was shown. Also Schmidt's copy of Mengs' "Joseph's Dream". For this he was awarded in the following year 1822 - like five other of his classmates in the second and third class of the Dresden Art Academy, for the quality of his work with a gratuity according to the rescript of the King of Saxony.

According to the address book of the royal residence city of Hanover for the year 1840, the portrait painter and drawing teacher lived in the house at Marktstrasse 454 .
