life and work

Friederike Manner studied at the University of Vienna and worked as a publishing editor and freelancer for various newspapers. She was married to the Jewish doctor Hans Brauchbar, with whom she had two children. In 1938 she and her family emigrated to Yugoslavia via Switzerland . In 1941 Hans Brauchbar was shot in the Šabac concentration camp . After 1945 Manner returned to Vienna with her children. There she worked as a literary critic and editor. In 1956 she put an end to her life.

In February 1938, Friederike Manner's first poetry was published. In 1948 she published her autobiographical novel The Dark Years at Wiener Verlag under the pseudonym Martha Florian , in which she processed her experiences during the Second World War and emigration . In 2019 the Germanist Evelyne Polt-Heinzl re -edited it in Edition Atelier . “[S] a meaning lies in the fact that Manner grasps the exile, which becomes the place of persecution, in all its facets. That she gives the people she has met a voice, an appearance, a character in just a few words. That she does not withhold their contradictions, the fits of generosity, indecision, cowardice, devotion. That she says freely what she thinks is right and wrong, but hardly ever rises above those she praises, ridicules, damned ”, as the writer Erich Hackl wrote in a review for the daily newspaper Der Standard .
