Johann Carl Rößler

Johann Carl Rößler (born May 18, 1775 in Görlitz , † February 20, 1845 in Dresden ) was a German portrait painter.

Trained as a nail smith in his youth, Rößler began his studies in 1794 at the Dresden Art Academy with Giovanni Battista Casanova .

Roessler visited Paris. In 1803 he and his fellow student Franz Gareis traveled from Paris via Marseille and Livorno to Rome, where Gareis died of typhus in the same year . Roessler spent the period from 1803 to 1807 in Rome . There he lived in the artists' quarter on the Spanish Steps , where he portrayed the then 22-year-old Karl Friedrich Schinkel . In 1806 he met Bertel Thorwaldsen in Rome ; this acquaintance continued even after Roessler returned in 1807.

In 1810 Rößler was appointed a member of the Academy for Portrait and History Painting, in 1815 he was appointed professor at the Dresden Art Academy.

Ernst Benedikt Kietz , Christian Tunica and Adolf Gottlob Zimmermann were among his students .
