August Hilber
August "Gustav" Hilber (born August 28, 1908 in Steyr ; † February 13, 1934 ) was an Austrian freedom fighter.
Hilber was an electrician in the Steyr works . He was a member of the Republican Schutzbund .
In 1934 he died in the Austrian civil war on February 13, 1934 while defending the Ennsleite in Steyr in the house at Konrad Deublerstrasse 1 (today Schosserstrasse 1) in the fight for democracy. In addition to Hilber, Johann Buchmayer (* 1914, killed at Schillerstraße 35) and Heinrich Maurer (* 1914, killed at Arbeitserstraße 6) were shot dead while defending the Ennsleite. The bodies of the three men were given to their relatives for burial and cremated on February 17th in the Steyr crematorium.
Hilber's grave, which still exists today, is located in the urn cemetery at Tabor in Steyr.
August-Hilber-Strasse in Steyr is named after him.
