August Schrader

August Schrader (* around 1820 in Germany; † after 1896) invented a copper diving helmet in 1849 , the Schrader valve for pneumatic tires in 1891 and the valve cap in 1896. The Schrader valve system established itself worldwide for pneumatic tires in motor vehicles.

Life

As a mechanic he emigrated from Hanover to the USA in New York in 1840 . A year earlier, Goodyear had patented the vulcanization of rubber. By the spring of 1844, Schrader had saved enough money to buy some machines and open a shop at 115 John Street in Manhattan. He manufactured daguerreotype machines and soon afterwards entered into a partnership with the lathe operator Christian Baecher.

In 1845 he sold fittings and valves for rubber products from the Goodyear brothers. While observing divers, he considered improving diving helmets and in 1849 produced two copper helmets, which he sold to Union India Rubber Co. for $ 12.00 each. In the following year he developed an air pump for diving suits. He exhibited an improved version at the Crystal Palace industrial fair in 1856.

In 1890 his son Georg joined the business.

Around this time, after a bike race at Niagara Falls, in which English riders won with their air-filled tires, there was a need for a bicycle valve , which he produced in 1891. In 1896 he patented the valve cap and introduced valves for car tires.
