August Stähelin (born September 16, 1812 in Basel ; † September 28, 1886 there ) was a Swiss business leader and politician .
biography
August Stähelin, son of a grocer's dealer, attended the École polytechnique in Paris from 1831–1833 and then did several internships in the Basel area and in England. In 1838 he became the technical director of F. Sarasin & Heusler, which operated mechanical spinning mills in Haagen im Wiesental and in Münchenstein . In 1862 he was given overall management of the company.
Politically, he stood as a main representative of the so-called Juste milieu between the conservatives and the radicals. From 1844–1884 he was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt and was instrumental in the constitutional revision in 1874, which replaced the so-called councilor regiment, which was shaped by the guilds, with a democratic constitution. 1849-1853 he was a small councilor. 1855–1860 and 1861–1866 he represented the canton of Basel-Stadt in the Council of States, which he presided over in 1857/58.
