August Waibel

August Waibel (born January 28, 1876 in Hohenems ; † September 11, 1937 there ) was an Austrian politician ( CSP ) and teacher. He was a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament from 1923 to 1937 and mayor of Hohenems from 1919 to 1932.

education and profession

Waibel first attended elementary school in Hohenems and then graduated from the teacher training college in Feldkirch . He worked as a teacher in Emsreute between 1894 and 1899 and then taught between 1899 and 1919 as a teacher at the elementary and community school in Hohenems. He was also a church caretaker from 1910 to 1937.

Politics and functions

Waibel was a member of the Christian Social Party and was also involved in numerous associations. In 1898 he was the founder of the gymnastics club of the Hohenems Workers' Association, which later traded as the Hohenems Gymnastics Association and was its chairman between 1905 and 1931. Furthermore, he was a co-founder of the Vorarlberg Rheingau and worked there between 1906 and 1923 as Gauturnwart. In 1924 he was appointed honorary gymnast. He was also a member of the Raiffeisenkasse Hohenems, where he was chairman of the supervisory board between 1898 and 1912, and from 1914 to 1918 he was paymaster. He was also a member of the Hohenems Volunteer Fire Brigade and a member and honorary member of the Hohenems Cycling Club.

In terms of local politics, Waibel was involved in local politics between 1909 and 1937 as a member of the municipal council of Hohenems, from June 3, 1919 to September 11, 1932, as mayor of his home town of Hohenems. As a member of the Feldkirch constituency, he represented the Christian Social Party between November 6, 1923 and November 21, 1932 in the Vorarlberg state parliament. He was also a member of the Economics Committee from 1923 to 1928 and a member of the Legal Committee in the 1930 session.

Private

August Waibel was born as the son of the old parish council, master shoemaker and church clerk Ferdinand Waibel and his wife Rosina Schwenninger. In 1907 he married Paulina Dietrich in Rankweil and between 1908 and 1931 he had five sons and three daughters.
