history

Today's Mount Stuart House replaces a previous building from 1718. This was planned by the Scottish architect Alexander McGill and was about 70 m long and about 20 m wide. In both the north and south of the main wing, wings went off in a westerly direction. With the exception of the Catholic chapel in the north wing, a fire in 1877 destroyed most parts of this house.

Today's Mount Stuart House was planned by Robert Rowand Anderson and built in 1878 for the 3rd Marquess of Bute . An undamaged part of the old building in the Georgian style was integrated into the current neo-Gothic building. It cost around £ 300,000 to build. The mausoleum of Mount Stuart House , which is adjacent to the north and is also listed , was built around 1900. In 1995, Mount Stuart House was finally opened to the public for tours.

Although the architecture of Mount Stuart House is based on medieval motifs, it was equipped with the latest technology at the time of construction. It was the first residential building in Scotland to have an electric lighting system. Since 1878 it had been connected to the telephone network that was under construction with its own line. It was equipped with a central heating system that was innovative for those times and connected the individual rooms with a pipe system. Mount Stuart House also had the first indoor heated swimming pool. To supply the building, a waterworks was built three kilometers away for this purpose .
