August von Briesen (born August 16, 1935 in Budapest ; † August / September 2003 in Paris ) was a painter of German-Hungarian origin, lithographer , draftsman and illustrator who lived in Paris.

Life dates

At the end of the Second World War, Briesen was deported to Siberia for three years because of his German origins - the father was German, the mother Hungarian. After his return he studied at the Art Academy in Budapest from 1952 . In 1956, after the Soviet Army put down the Hungarian uprising , he left Hungary and first went to England, where he made his drawings for Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas and the Diabelli Variations . After traveling in Holland, Germany and Italy, he finally settled in France in 1972.

He participated with his works in numerous exhibitions and worked as a book illustrator. The focus of his work is the painterly examination of works of music.

Briesen died in his Paris attic apartment during the summer 2003 heat wave. Only after the authorities published a list of names of 57 heat victims whose death had not been noticed by anyone did the fate of the lonely artist Briesen become known. In September 2003, the Paris city council decided to purchase a work by Briesen in honor of the heat victims and to exhibit it in the lobby of the Musée National d'Art Moderne . Briesen was buried together with the other lonely heat victims in the Paris cemetery of Thiais, where the city of Paris maintains graves for the destitute and homeless.
