Auguste Pottier
Auguste Pottier (* 1823 in Coulommiers ; † 1896 ) was a French-American furniture designer.
Life
Auguste or August Pottier trained as a wood carver in Paris and emigrated to New York in 1847, where he initially worked for EW Hutchings and Son. From 1851 he worked briefly with Gustave Herter , in 1856 he was employed by Rochefort and Skarren , where he probably met William P. Stymus. With this he took over the company in 1859 after Rochefort died and called it Pottier & Stymus .
Pottier & Stymus
Pottier & Stymus were among the leading interior decorators in the USA in their day and prospered accordingly: Leland Stanford was one of their customers and in 1869 they supplied the furniture for the President's office and part of the White House . The Lexington Avenue headquarters, which they moved into in 1871, was huge, and by 1872 there are 700 male and 50 female employees at Pottier & Stymus. Allegedly more than 400,000 articles were in stock in the company's magazine.
In the 1880s, a fire in this magazine, located on 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue, caused damage valued at $ 200,000. At this point, Pottier & Stymus were in the process of liquidating and had just restructured the company. The sum insured was $ 100,000.
