Auguste Reymond SA was an independent Swiss watch manufacturer based in Tramelan in the Swiss Jura . The name comes from the founder Auguste Reymond (* 1872; † September 1946 in Lausanne). Auguste Reymond SA manufactured the Auguste Reymond and ARSA watch brands. Auguste Reymond has been a brand of Century Time Gems Ltd. since 2019.

Company history

In 1898 the 26-year-old bank employee A. Reymond founded his workshop in Tramelan (in German Tramlingen) in a rented apartment. Seven years later he opened his own company building in Tramelan at 9 rue du Midi with over 100 employees.

Auguste Reymond built a factory in the Vallée de Joux , where most of the Swiss watch manufacturers are located, to produce his own movements in the manner of a watch manufacturer . To strengthen its own factory production, Reymond bought the UNITAS factory in Tramelan in 1926 .

Due to the diversification of the company, watches were sold under the watch brands ARSA (by Auguste Reymond SA ) and A. Reymond , while the production of Ébauchen was carried out by ARSA and UNITAS. The company joined the ASUAG ( Allgemeine Schweizerische Uhren AG ) group of companies in 1931 as the first watch brand . Before the quartz crisis of the 1970s, the watch manufacturer had 300 employees and generated sales of over fifteen million Swiss francs. ASUAG became insolvent and, together with SSIH, became the Swatch Group . In 1984, the then director and partner James Choffat bought the Auguste Reymond brand out of the group as part of the ASUAG / SSIH merger. The company has been independent since then.

In 1989 Thomas Loosli became manager of the company. Loosli, who has a university degree in art history and French literature and is also a jazz lover, took care of realigning Auguste Reymond's product line. As a result, some limited small series of mechanical watches were launched in the 1990s, some with extensively restored and refined pocket watch movements from the company's own archive. Examples of this are the "Boogie" series, with the pocket watch calibers Unitas 6325, Unitas 6425 and Unitas 6498, or the "Ballad" with the hand-wound Unitas 6580.

In 2012 Thomas Loosli retired and handed the company over to Lorenz Aebischer, who had previously worked for companies in the Swatch Group for many years, first for Mido and later for Tissot. In 2019 Auguste Reymond was then taken over by Philip WA Klingenberg, the owner of Century Time Gems Ltd. Bought. The plan was to subsequently integrate the production of Auguste Reymond watches into the Century factory in Nidau, Switzerland.
