The Augustinian Church (Polish. Kościół Augustiański ) or Katherina-von-Alexandria-und-Margarethen-Kirche (Polish. Kościół św. Katarzyny Aleksandryjskiej i św. Małgorzaty ) in Krakow is a Roman Catholic church on the Augustiańska in the Kazimierz district south Krakow old town .
history
The Augustinian Church was built around 1342 by Casimir III. the great one for the Augustinians , whom he brought from Prague to Krakow, in the newly built city of Kazimierz on an island in the Vistula south of the old town . The church was consecrated in 1378. The knight Stibor von Stiborice and Beckov donated the expansion of the church at the beginning of the 15th century . Other patrons of the church and the monastery were the magnates Lanckoroński and the cardinal Zbigniew Oleśnicki. In 1443 part of the vault collapsed in an earthquake, a very rare occurrence in Poland, and was renewed until 1505. The bell tower dates from the 15th century. The early Baroque main altar by Andrzej Wenesta dates from 1634, the original Gothic altar, the Krakow Augustinian polyptych by Nicolaus Haberschrack is now in the Erasmus Ciołek Bishop's Palace , a branch of the Krakow National Museum . The church was restored by Karol Knaus and Karol Kremer after another earthquake in 1786 in the 19th century . In 1993 the Augustinians returned to the monastery and church that they had to leave during the German occupation.
The knight Spytek Wawrzyniec Jordan is buried in the church. His tomb was made by the most important Polish-Italian Mannerist sculptor and architect Santi Gucci .
Works of art
In the church there are numerous Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque works of art, including Gothic frescoes in the cloisters of the monastery.
