The Aukštojas (also: Aukštojo kalnas , Aukštasis kalnas ) is the highest point in Lithuania at 293.842 m . The hill is part of the Belarusian ridge and is not far from the border with Belarus near the village of Medininkai , about 24 kilometers southeast of the capital Vilnius . In 2004 the survey was re-measured by the Institute of Geodesy of the Gediminas University of Technology in Vilnius with the help of GPS technology. Until then, the Juozapinės kalnas with 292.7 m, about 500 m east of the Aukštojas, was the highest point in the country. In 1985, the Lithuanian geographer and geomorphologist Rimantas Krupickas reported concerns about this.
The governor of the Vilnius administrative district has rededicated the previously agricultural land around the Aukštojas. It is to be used for tourist and cultural purposes in the future. There is a grove of conifers on the mountain top. The Lietuvos viršūnės association , headed by Vladas Vitkauskas, a well-known Lithuanian mountaineer, is trying to establish the mountain as a landscape monument of the region.
Aukštojas (also: Aukštėjas , Aukštujis ) is a name for the supreme god, the creator of the world , in Lithuanian mythology . Libertas Klimka, professor at the Pedagogical University of Vilnius , suggested him as the namesake for the new highest elevation in the country and won a competition with it. The mountain was baptized on June 20, 2005 in an unofficial ceremony. On November 18, 2005, the regional parliament gave its approval.
