Auld Kirk of Ayr

The Auld Kirk of Ayr is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Ayr in the council area of South Ayrshire . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish Monuments List in the highest category A. The church is still in use as such. In addition, the associated gatehouse is also classified as a Category A structure. A monument ensemble does not exist.

history

After Cromwell's troops seized the nearby St. John's Church, a new building became necessary. Colonel Alured was in charge of collecting donations to finance the building of the church . The construction started in 1652 based on a design by Theophilius Rankeine , also Theophilus Rankeine , was completed in 1654. Possibly the Auld Kirk of Ayr is on the site of a Franciscan monastery that was supposedly secularized in 1567. However, no traces of this structure can be found today.

The church was redesigned in 1836 by David Bryce . After an extensive renovation in 1864, the furniture was renewed in 1887. The building was last expanded in 1933 and then modernized again in 1952.

description

The Auld Kirk of Ayr is located off the High Street not far from the Ayrufers in the center of Ayr. The building was designed with elements of Gothic architecture. The originally T-shaped sandstone building is made with pointed arched windows and tracery . The lead glass windows are artistically designed with Christian motifs. The building ends with slate-covered gable roofs .

Gatehouse

The gatehouse is located at the northwest entrance to the cemetery grounds, in the middle of which the church is located. It was built in 1656 and later revised several times. The quarry stone building has a square floor plan. It is worked with an enclosed elliptical arch. In the interior, stone benches are embedded in the masonry. A double-leaf iron gate blocks the entrance. The slate roof, like the upper fragments of the masonry, is more recent.
