Barn and other buildings in Aulestad

Aulestad is a farm in Follebu in the municipality of Gausdal in eastern Gaustal in Norway about 18 km northwest of Lillehammer .

It houses a literary museum in honor of the Nobel Prize laureate Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson , who bought it in 1874 and wrote his most famous works there. During his lifetime Bjørnson was at the center of literary, cultural and political life in Norway. In 1890 Bjørnson's youngest son Erling Bjørnson (1868-1959), politician of the Peasant Party and the fascist Nasjonal Samling , took over the property, but gave it back to his father in 1901 because he could not farm it. The main building was declared “national property” in 1923, and in 1926 it was presented as a museum. After the death of Bjørnson's wife Karoline in 1934, Aulestad was taken over by the state and placed under the administration of Maihaugen in 1965 . From 2008 to 2010 the property was closed. It was restored on the occasion of the 100th year of death.
