Introduction of the Auraicept na nÉces in Leabhar Bhaile an Mhóta ("The Book of Ballymote")

Auraicept na n-Éces [ ˈaurikʲept na ˈnʲeːgʲes ] ("Guide for the learned poets") is the name of a collection of treatises on the Irish language . The original author is considered to be the scholar Longarad, who is said to have begun the first chapters as early as the 7th century. According to another tradition, the first book of the work was written by Cenn Fáelad mac Ailella .

This work has survived in two manuscripts from the 14th to the 16th century, which have been expanded compared to the original version, but contain different versions. The treatise begins with an introduction on the origins of the Irish language in connection with the Babylonian confusion . This is followed by information on the Ogam script as well as the grammar and metrics of Irish as required by the filid ("poets"). The work is an attempt by monks to apply the Latin rules to their mother tongue. The basis is the works of the classical grammarians Aelius Donatus and Priscianus as well as the Etymologiae of Isidore of Seville .
