Out of concern for Europe

Out of concern for Europe. An Appeal is a non-fiction book by the former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl from 2014.

content

In the book, Kohl refers to mistakes that were made after his tenure during and after the introduction of the euro . This applies above all to the softening of the euro stability criteria. This process is a “shame of German politics”, said Kohl, who sharply criticized the politics of the red-green federal government. The softening was also a betrayal of the close Franco-German cooperation, which should never have turned against the Stability Pact, according to the author. The book closes with the basic conviction that Europe is our fate, responsibility and obligation. Europe is a historic opportunity that must be seized. Above all, politics must once again proceed courageously and decisively. Europe should again become a matter close to the heart of the people.

Kohl denies that the euro was in return for France's agreement to German unity, but adds that he would have paid that price at the time, if asked. He admits that he would not have received a majority among the Germans in a single vote for the common currency, but sees himself sufficiently legitimized by his multiple election as Federal Chancellor.
