Darmstadt repair shop

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The railway repair shop is a former industrial site in Darmstadt .

history

1873 to 2000

The railway repair shop was put into operation on February 14, 1873 as the central workshop of the Hessian Ludwig Railway on the Mainz – Darmstadt – Aschaffenburg line. After the nationalization of the Ludwigsbahn and the merger with the Main-Neckar-Bahn , the railway repair shop was responsible for the maintenance of freight and passenger cars as workshop office I (later main workshop I). By June 2000, wheelsets were repaired on the approximately 15,000 m² railway repair shop on Frankfurter Strasse. The resulting popping noise, which echoed into the adjacent Johannesviertel, earned the area the name "Knell".

The workshop office II (main workshop 2) on Dornheimer Weg was responsible for the maintenance of the locomotives. The Werkstättenamt II was given up in 1955.

2000 until today

After the railway repair shop was shut down, the city of Darmstadt bought the site in July 2002 and thus acquired direct influence on the further development of the location. The planning objective was an extensive urban redevelopment, the so-called "Rochade". It was planned to relocate the municipal supply and disposal companies to the Knell area and to make the areas that would become free in the city center available for residential construction.

Due to the restrictions imposed by the “Seveso II Directive”, which was amended in Brussels at the end of 2003, the plans had to be changed. Darmstadt's urban development responded to the changed circumstances by focusing on strengthening the chemical location. Among other things, it has offered the Merck company premises in the vicinity for operational purposes.

Regardless of the changes, the other essential parts of “castling” can be implemented. The southern part of the "Knell" was realized as a new location for the local supply of the adjacent residential areas.

The EAD was established in the northwest corner of the Knell. Post has built a new distribution center on the western edge. A gas turbine power plant was built in the middle . In the southeast corner is the Entega. The northeast corner is still wasteland.

Monument protection

On the site there is an old water tower from the 19th century that is under monument protection . In the northwest corner of the area there are two listed pointed bunkers from the time of the Second World War.
