In meteorology , radiation is usually understood to be the transfer of heat from the earth's surface to the layers of air above and, in geophysics, analogous to the transfer of heat from the entire atmosphere in the form of thermal radiation to space .

The radiation from the earth's surface can lead to sharp drops in temperature in the air layers close to the ground during the night, since there is no solar radiation at this time , and especially in a cloudless sky and dry air . If there is a cloud cover or a layer of haze , a larger part of the thermal radiation is directed back to the earth as atmospheric counter-radiation . This effect, which is also caused during the day by the cloud cover and generally by greenhouse gases , is called the greenhouse effect .

The effective radiation is the difference between the radiation from the earth's surface and the counter radiation.
