In Lithuanian mythology, Austėja is the goddess of honey bees , who is also responsible for the reproduction of plants. In addition, she was considered a protector of marriageable women and pregnant women.

Today the first name Austeja is common in Lithuania, the short form of the name is Auste . In 2005 Austeja was the sixth most common female first name in Lithuania.
