Blood exchange transfusion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An exchange transfusion is a blood transfusion , in which the whole blood of a patient is replaced with the blood of a donor. It is used in particularly severe cases of neonatal jaundice , especially if it is caused by an intolerance to rhesus . In the case of hydrops fetalis , it is usually performed in the fetus in the womb. Today, however, such problems can largely be avoided by taking preventive measures in the mother.
