Austin Island is an island in the South Georgia archipelago in the South Atlantic . It is the easternmost of the Samuel Islands and lies east of Garnet Point .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 2009. It is named after the RFA Fort Austin of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary , which was deployed in April 1982 as a hospital ship in the Falklands War during the reconquest of South Georgia after the invasion by the armed forces of Argentina .
