Australia Act
The Australia Act consists of two laws , which were passed largely identically in 1985 by the British Parliament and in 1986 by the Parliament of Australia . The Australia Act made the Australian legislature and judiciary completely independent of the corresponding British institutions.
Come into effect
The then Governor General of Australia, Sir Ninian Stephen , approved the law on December 4, 1985. The Australia Act finally came into force through a declaration signed by Queen Elizabeth II on March 3, 1986 in the Australian seat of government in Canberra .

With the Australia Act, the Parliament of the United Kingdom gave up the final powers over the Australian Constitution. The legislative independence of the Australian Confederation had existed since the Westminster Statute of 1931 ; Exceptions, however, were constitutional amendments for which the British Parliament continued to have competences.
