Austria Alpha

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Austria-Alpha was an Austrian motorcycle brand owned by the owner of a large foundry and successful racing driver Josef Illichmann on 8. Hasnerstrasse in Vienna from 1933 to 1952 next to his foundry . His buildings included 250 cc V2-cylinder racing machines and 500 cc single cylinders with OHV control as well as front forks and rear suspension modifications. Illichmann gave up motorcycle construction in order to devote more time to his large foundry.

Illichmann's "radial rear wheel suspension" offered the advantage over Carl Jurisch's retrofittable straight- path rear wheel suspension - according to a brochure from 1953 - as with swing arm bearings: "No stretching of the chain, as the wheel was guided in a circular arc".
