The Austria was a single-seater glider that was built in 1930 as a one-off for Robert Kronfeld at Kegel-Flugzeugbau Kassel.

History and construction

The aircraft, also known as the Kupper Ku 4 , was designed by August Kupper as a further development of his Ku 1 Kakadu from 1928 with the aim of a low rate of descent and a large glide angle . The self-supporting four-part wing of the high-wing aircraft was sharply pointed , the 5.5 m long outer surfaces had a slightly negative V-position . A 40 cm wide wing section with an aerodynamically designed fuselage-surface transition was firmly connected to the fuselage. The 9.3 m long inner surfaces were trapezoidal. Six fabric-covered flaps each with triple ball-bearing bearings over the entire span served to arch the wing and for transverse control . The cockpit was located in a 0.55 m wide hull boat, which merged into a streamlined structure at the top that accommodated the center wing. At the end of the tubular tail boom to a subdued was tailplane with end plates side row . Both rudders could be deflected outwards by pressing both rudder pedals in order to act as an air brake . The chassis was an air-sprung ash runner held on the side by elastic bands. There were no rear spurs, the runner was supported against the main rib with rubber buffers.

use

After a few test flights, Robert Kronfeld's flight took place on July 19, 1932, from the Wasserkuppe with a length of 41 km. During the next flight on July 22, 1932, the wing broke in a cloud flight , Kronfeld jumped off with the rescue parachute , the aircraft was destroyed on impact.
