The federal law on identity cards for Swiss citizens of 22 June 2001 (short ID Act , AWG ), SR 143.1, governs the issuance of passports and identity cards of Switzerland . It is also intended to combat the misuse of these ID cards.
It came into force on October 1, 2002 and replaced the ordinance of July 17, 1959 on the Swiss passport and the ordinance of May 18, 1994 on the Swiss identity card.
On May 17, 2009, a referendum with a 50.1 percent vote in favor of an amendment to the Identity Card Act, which provides for the introduction of biometric passports .
