The Autoflug GmbH is an established in 1919, medium-sized company in the field of aeronautics and defense technology . It is based in Rellingen and is owned by the Sedlmayr family.

history

Autoflug was founded on October 1, 1919 by Gerhard Sedlmayr (1891–1952) in Berlin-Johannisthal as Autoflug, a specialist in the automotive and aviation industries, Gerhard Sedlmeyr .

Even if Gerhard Sedlmayr, as a former aviation pioneer, actually came from the aviation industry, he gave his company a second pillar in the form of motor transport; this was probably also necessary due to the restrictions of the Versailles Treaty . The company traded in a wide range of products for the then rapidly growing market of motorized road transport and also manufactured its own motorcycles (then called motorized motorcycles).

After the restrictions of the Versailles Treaty were relaxed, Autoflug became the general contractor for several international manufacturers of aviation equipment, including the Irvin Air Chute Co. owned by the US parachute pioneer Leslie Irvin . In 1931, the company received approval to manufacture Irvin parachutes under license. During the late 30s and especially during the Second World War , Autoflug manufactured belts, locks and emergency parachutes in large numbers for the Air Force .

After the Second World War, Gerhard Sedlmayr received approval in October 1945 to run a repair shop for children's clothes and other textile goods at the Goslar location . From the beginning of 1951 the actual rebuilding of the company began, which the company founder did not live to see due to his death in 1952.

In 1955 his son, Gerhard Sedlmayr, took over the rebuilding of the company in Hamburg; In 1958 the head office was relocated to Rellingen. By resuming the cooperation with Leslie Irvin and the beginning of the cooperation with the British ejection seat manufacturer Martin-Baker , Autoflug quickly became a market leader in the industry and a permanent partner of the newly founded Bundeswehr .

Today, Autoflug develops and produces safety seats for aircraft and special military vehicles, fuel sensors for aircraft as well as parachutes, harnesses and pilot's protective suits and special equipment.

Works

In addition to the main plant in Rellingen, Autoflug also has a plant in Ummendorf , where rescue and safety equipment for the Tornado and Eurofighter weapon systems is looked after in cooperation with the Bundeswehr .
