Automated Camera Effects System
Automated Camera Effects System ( ACES for short ) was a special effects camera system that was developed by the Disney company in 1979 for the science fiction film The Black Hole .
background
For the special effects of the film, the first computer-controlled camera system Dykstraflex , developed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), was to be used. However, the conditions were unacceptable, so Disney developed its own system, which was technically superior to the ILM system, since ACES could be used with a moving camera before Matte Paintings . It was thus possible to position a model between the matte painting and the camera and to move the camera in front of the model and the matte image, which created a spatial effect. The system thus belongs to motion control photography .
The system was developed by Peter Ellenshaw of Disney Studios. He worked with Eustace Lycett , Art Cruickshank and Don Iwerks .
