Autopsy (librarianship)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Autopsy in means librarianship the cataloging based on the actual present when cataloging documentary reference unit . In contrast, media can also be entered in the library catalog without being physically available by copying or transferring the necessary data from other sources (catalogs, bibliographies ).

One benefit of the autopsy is the reduction in the number of bad takeovers. An autopsy is prescribed in several library regulations . The German National Library uses the principle. In cases in which several authors with the same name come into question, in the case of abbreviated names, anonymous or pseudonymous works, the autopsy alone cannot assign a work to the correct author. Further information must then be added.
