AviSynth is a free frameserver . While the current stable version 2.6 exclusively for Microsoft Windows was written should of version 3.0 - which in the pre-alpha is stage created - a Linux - Port appear. However, development came to a complete standstill.

overview

AviSynth has its own scripting language and lacks a graphical user interface . The AviSynth scripts with the file extension “.AVS” contain plain text , so they can be edited with any text editor . With the help of this scripting language, the user can create his own filters with comparatively little effort . In addition, users can find ready-made scripts on the project's website. Furthermore, the functionality of AviSynth can be expanded with the help of plug-ins .

functionality

AviSynth acts as a frame server which reads files and forwards the data stream to another program using a virtual file. If an AVS script file is opened with a supporting video editing program ( e.g. VirtualDub ), it behaves towards the target program like an AVI file, which would contain a raw video and audio track. In this way, formats can also be opened which are not supported by the target program or which would require the installation of a codec beforehand . With the help of a number of integrated and retrofittable filters, the image and sound material can already be processed by AviSynth before it is passed on. Since there is no compression, there is no generation loss .

VapourSynth

Mid-2012, the programmer Fredrik Mellbin started the project VapourSynth , which is intended as a modern remake of AviSynth. In contrast to the original, VapourSynth is platform-independent and can handle multithreading . AviSynth's own scripting language is no longer used, however, and Python is used instead.
