Avicenna Directory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Avicenna directory was created in March 2008. The aim of the directory is to create an Internet-based directory of all universities, colleges and schools for all academic professions in the healthcare sector. The directory is named after the Persian doctor Abū Alī al-Husayn ibn Abdullāh ibn Sīnā, who is known in Latin as Avicenna in the European cultural area .

background

The World Health Organization (WHO) has published a World Directory of Medical Schools since 1953 with all medical schools recognized by the respective states. The last printed (7th) version was published in 2000. In August 2008 the WHO published this 7th version electronically in the Avicenna directory. This has been updated and expanded since then. Although the World Directory of Medical Schools had some electronic updates, much of its information was out of date because it was compiled before 2000. An electronic database can be kept up to date more easily.

development

An important part of the expansion will be additional information on quality assurance in schools. If the directory initially only starts with medical faculties, other faculties and schools for professions in the health care sector are to be gradually added.

editor

The Avicenna Directory is managed by the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. In August 2007, the WHO and the University of Copenhagen signed an agreement giving the latter responsibility for the administration and publication of the directory. It is supported by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). The WHO will continue to be a partner of the program and will be involved in data collection.
