Lake Awasa ( Amharic አዋሳ ሐይቅ , Awasa Hayk ') is a lake in Ethiopia , located in the Rift Valley about 200 km south of Addis Ababa .
description
The lake is 16 kilometers long and 9 kilometers wide, with an area of 88 square kilometers. It has a maximum depth of 22 meters and is located at an altitude of 1680 meters.
exploration
Because it is relatively easily accessible to scientists, the lake is the best-studied of the Rift Valley lakes in Ethiopia. According to William Taylor, a member of the African Lakes and Rivers Research Group at the University of Waterloo : “Despite the lack of a drainage facility, Awasa Lake is essentially a freshwater lake (conductivity is variable, but less than 1000 µS) which indicates this that it must have an underground drain. "
Lake Awasa is polymictic , although periods of stratification occur in the dry season. Oxygen starvation quickly develops under the thermocline when stratification occurs.
