Awashima ( Japanese 粟 島 ) is an island in the Sea of Japan off the west coast of the Japanese prefecture of Niigata .
geography
The island is about 7 km long and 2.5 km wide, with an area of 9.69 km² while the coastline is 23 km. The highest point is the Koshiba ( 小 柴山 , -san ) with 265.6 m.
The municipality of Awashimaura extends over the island , although only a narrow coastal strip is populated in the central east (districts Hinomiyama and Uchiura) and in the southwest (districts Kamaya and Ōhira). The rest consists of mountain forests.
history
Based on archaeological finds of the typical ceramics of the Middle and Late Jōmon Period , it has been possible to prove that the island has been inhabited for at least 5000 to 4500 years. The first written mention can be found in the medicine book Daidō Ruijuhō from the year 808, but still as Aoshima ( 粟 生 島 ). Although there is also an Awashima in the anthology of poems Man'yōshū , which was completed in 759 , it is disputed which island is meant.
In the Edo period , the island first belonged to the Murakami fiefdom , was administered directly to the empire in 1642 ( tenryō ) and then in trust for this from the fiefs of Tatebayashi , Shōnai and finally from 1753 Yonezawa .
