AxCrypt is a software for case by case encryption and decryption of single files , which the AES - algorithm with a key length of 128 or 256 bits used. When a file is encrypted, AxCrypt creates an archive that contains the encrypted data of the file as well as additional metadata and then deletes the original file . A double click can be used to open the archive. AxCrypt then decrypts the file it contains, writes it into the file system and then calls the application responsible for the file extension.
AxCrypt works with Windows 95 / 98 / Me / NT / 2000 / XP / 7 / 8 / 10 and with macOS and is free software under the GNU GPL is. The manufacturer is the company Axantum Software AB from Järfälla , Sweden .
AxCrypt is currently offered in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Russian and Polish. The program also has a built-in file shredder .
A 64-bit version has also been available since August 29, 2009 .
