Axel Müller (chemist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Axel Hans Egon Müller (born May 8, 1947 in Neuwied ) is a German chemist ( polymer chemistry ).

Life

Müller studied chemistry at the University of Mainz , where he received his diploma in 1972 and in 1977 Günter Schulz Victor doctorate was (Dissertation: Kinetics of anionic polymerization of methyl methacrylate in THF with monofunctional initiator and cesium as counterion ) and in 1991 habilitation . In 1999 he became professor for macromolecular chemistry at the University of Bayreuth . From 2007 to 2009 he was Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry, Biology and Geosciences. In 2012 he retired there and was then a Fellow at the Gutenberg Research College of the University of Mainz.

He has been visiting professor in China (Zheijang University), Michigan Molecular Institute, Canada (McGill University), Japan (Kyoto), Australia (University of New South Wales), France (University Paris VI) and Poland (Center for Polymer and Carbon Materials) , Academy of Sciences, Gliwice).

He is known for research on the mechanisms of ionic polymerization and group transfer polymerization . His research also contributed to a better understanding of controlled radical polymerization ( ATRP , RAFT polymerization ). Using these methods, he also synthesized novel polymers and investigated the self-organization of complex nanoparticles, especially Janus particles (nanoparticles with two chemically different sides) that serve to stabilize emulsions or to improve the mechanical properties of polymer mixtures. He dealt with block copolymers and branched polymers, organic nanoparticles and organic-inorganic hybrids. His laboratory produced bottle-brush-shaped and star-shaped polymers and nanoparticles.

In 2012 he received the Hermann Staudinger Prize and in 2011 he became a Fellow of the Polymer Chemistry Section of the American Chemical Society . He holds several patents (including block copolymers for optical data storage, ATRP in aqueous solution with cyclodextrins, polyether / diolefin rubbers for tires with low rolling resistance, materials for dental cement). In 2004 he received the Distinguished Polymer Scientist Award at the IUPAC World Polymer Congress MACRO 2004.

He is co-editor of Polymer magazine .
